Shannon Hitt began her career at The Arc of Delaware County, where she provided services in their Day Habilitation program. After transitioning to a Medicaid Service Manager position, she began working with Sheldon in 2017. Since then, and through her transition to Southern Tier Connect, the pair have worked together to meet his goals. In her role, Shannon has supported members in obtaining all of the supports they need, such as widening doorways, adding ceiling track lifts, and enrolling in services. Most recently, she supported Sheldon in moving into his own apartment.

Sheldon is a soft-spoken young man who is well-versed in the digital world! He loves playing video games and catching up on his favorite YouTube channels. Sheldon often spends time in his community, attending local dinners and meeting new people. Most of all, Sheldon loves having a quiet space to call his own.

Shannon supported Sheldon in beginning the process of living independently through several group meetings. Sheldon and Shannon met with Jordyn and Alex of Delaware Opportunities where they created action steps to work toward independent living. As Shannon researched services to support Sheldon, she found, “There are so many local resources that people don’t know about.” Her research paid off when she found several services that Sheldon qualified for.

First, the group reviewed Sheldon’s bank statements with him to support him in developing a budget. Shannon explained, “Sheldon had some subscription services that he didn’t realize he was paying for. He was happy to cancel those to save for his move.” Sheldon determined what was important to keep in his budget to make sure he had room for all of his necessities. Behind the scenes, Shannon worked hard to find a variety of resources. She assisted him in applying for programs that would help his move go smoothly and allow him to live financially independent.

Next, it took some time to find an apartment that fit his budget, but once they found a few options, Jordyn and Alex provided transportation to view the apartments. It truly was a team effort. Finally, Sheldon could envision what it would be like to make a space his own!

In true community spirit, the pair worked to find furnishings for the apartment at local church sales and thrift shops. Before long, Sheldon’s apartment became the homey oasis he needed. Now that he is settled into his own space and routine, he is excited to learn more about cooking! He says, “I’d like to cook a little of everything.” Soon enough, Sheldon will be hosting dinner parties for all of his friends!

For Shannon, the community connection and the end result of her work at STC keep her excited for the next project. She says, “It’s meaningful work that affects the people who live in my community. No two days are the same, and there’s always lots to do.” Shannon and Sheldon are fortunate to call the same town home. She has the privilege of supporting someone in her own community and to learn more about local resources.

Sheldon’s closing thoughts say it all, “I’m happy here.” Thanks to Shannon, Jordyn, and Alex, Sheldon had the support he needed to make a much-needed move. We are excited to see him continue to make his apartment his own as he settles into his new community.
