March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM)! This month highlights the need for the inclusion of people with disabilities in our communities. Additionally, the day reminds us that people with disabilities contribute in meaningful way to all aspects of our communities.

Below are a few ways you might engage with DDAM this year:

  • Become familiar with the different types of developmental disabilities [link https://www.cdc.gov/child-development/about/developmental-disability-basics.html]
  • Follow disability activists and organizations on social media that support the disability community
  • Stay up to date on advocacy opportunities with resources like Care Management Alliance of New York
  • Assume “they can.” Someone who has a disability may do something differently. Don’t assume they need your help and always ask if you are unsure.
  • Support representatives who advocate for disability rights

At STC, we support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to lead fulfilling and healthy lives. Our individualized approach ensures that people with I/DD set goals for themselves based on their interests and needs. We are proud to support this dynamic community across the Southern Tier.

How can you support DDAM? Share with others why you wear orange in March to spread awareness. You can also visit the DDAM website and the STC website for resources and information on developmental disabilities.
