Southern Tier Connect is proud to share an upcoming event with our families and friends! Please read the following message from Lori Martin, President of Alive With Autism
Alive With Autism is a not for profit organization supporting families who are affected by autism in Broome and Tioga Counties. We have been in existence since 2008. Alive With Autism was formed by a mom whose son has autism. She soon recruited the Speech Therapist and an Occupational Therapist who was working with her son, his grandmother, aunt, a friend of the family and myself as board members. We began to reach out to the community having our first Walk/Run. After her son graduated from school she decided to step down and asked me to be the President. Our board now consists of 8 committed, compassionate and caring ladies. We are all in the field of education; an Occupational Therapist, a Speech Therapist, and 6 Special Education Teachers. We all love what we do as volunteers in supporting our families.
Alive With Autism accepts applications from families who are in need of assistance. Some of the applications have come from Service Providers in our community who are reaching out for specific items to support those they are working with. Many items are not covered by insurance and families have exhausted all resources in hopes of helping their child. We have provided families with gift cards for the purchase of electronics to support communication, gift cards for apps to download to assist with learning, gift cards to purchase dietary items needed for special diets, assistance in attending specialty camps, and donations to support Adaptive Skiing.
We are preparing for our 9th annual walk. Our Walk/Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, April 28th at Otsiningo Park from 12-2. We will have Animal Adventure, Juggler, Magician, and Zumba.
